The City of London Corporation has had its own special way of being a local authority for many, many years. Its methods are mysterious to many, not least its novel form of democracy, which includes franchising Square Mile workers as well as its small number of residents.
Perhaps the most curious thing about this year’s City elections, though, is that the outcomes in several wards were foregone conclusions.
You might expect that a spirit of virtuous competition would be strong in the very heart of UK capitalism, but when it came to winning seats on the Corporation’s Common Council, the term “no contest” often had a literal meaning.
