It is one thing to acknowledge that London has its problems, notably housing shortages and poverty, or that the UK's heavy dependence on its capital's economy is not ideal. It is quite another to proclaim to anyone who will listen that London is a hellish urban jungle where decent folk live in constant fear and vicious criminals rule.

Such characterisations are as crude as they are false as they are unfair. But as we have seen repeatedly in recent years, they appeal to a certain sort of person - the sort who thought Brexit would be good for the country and are presently persuaded that Nigel Farage as Prime Minister would, to adapt a slogan, Make Britain Great Again.
