This substantially misses the point. All the stats are fine and all, but all the North is asking for is the same opportunity to stand on its own two feet as London.

For example, the share of private vs public R&D is higher in the north west than in Ox-Cam and (to a lesser extent) London.

And how is the North meant to pay for itself if the London-based Treasury (yes I know Darlington, but it's not executive decision making there) doesn't allow Northern cities to levy their own taxes and pay for their own versions of Crossrail?

And what about the expansion of Leeds Bradford airport that was blocked by the London-based central government? And the Leeds tram in 20 years ago that was blocked by the London-based central government?

It's fine saying that London taxes pay for non-London services. But a bit of interrogation as to why that's the case wouldn't go amiss.
