“A lack of respect and co-operation between political parties.” You don’t say. So rather like most other London boroughs then.

The sense I always get from this is that governments – Tory and Labour – dislike Lutfur Rahman’s politics, rather than how Tower Hamlets is run.

I recall journalists like Andrew Gilligan making many claims like ‘a polling station was moved to make it harder to vote’. So I went to see ‘examples,’ such as that polling station in the Isle of Dogs that had been moved – to the other side of a zebra crossing. There was much other such guff.

I have no idea whether Tower Hamlets is secretive. (My fleeting impression is the opposite compared to elsewhere) but I know many other such councils are. I have reported recently on Redbridge Council where, in my view, the borough was breaking the law in allowing the former Leader of the Council not to list properties he was renting out (and ditto for the other MP elected from its councillor numbers last year) and also where, until I exposed such recently, more than a third of its councillors did not list any surgery details.

I will be more convinced about these government investigations when inspectors are sent into a council of the same political colour as the government.
