Many years ago I heard Tony Pidgley advocate 50% affordable across the board on the basis that if all council’s stick to it then it is a level playing field. Of course life isn’t as simple as that but if it is policy and the planning inspectorate is doing its job it’s worth a try. I know of at least one major development outside Cambridge where it worked.

As you say, Corbynites cannot do Maths, which is a pity. It certainly prevented Labour getting back into power for five years. In the past, well, when BoJo was Mayor, the building companies simply accepted whatever percentage of houses being built had to be for social tenants. Then when they were built BoJo simply accepted that they could not make a profit if this rule was not removed. It worked all the time. I live in North London from 1958 until 1964 when there were no one sleeping in doorways or generally being homeless because there were sufficient council housing and bedsits in what would now be multiple occupancy and unsafe for human occupancy. The best solution is to restore the funding and capacity of Local Authorities to build council housing for people who have a historic right to live in the authorities area. Next best solution is to purchase council houses that were sold under the right to buy scheme and restore them for social tenants. It is the exorbitant price of building land which forces private buildings companies from building for social tenants.
